What is a thrust ball bearing ?
A thrust ball bearing is designed to support axial loads (thrust loads) while allowing smooth rotation between the parts. It consists of a ring which is made up of a pair of chrome steel washers separated by balls as the rolling elements and spaced by a retainer. The function of the washers is to hold the balls together as a single element in order to facilitate smooth rotation by creating a separation of the moving parts of the bearing. Radial loads cannot be supported by thrust load bearings.
These bearings use a considerably large number of balls which facilitates the capacity to carry a high thrust load in smaller space.
Thrust ball bearings may either be of single direction or double direction.
Below are the various kinds of thrust ball bearings.
1. Flat-race thrust bearing
This type of thrust ball bearing does not have grooves and therefore can accommodate some degree of misalignment. One race can therefore slightly shift in relation to the other. There is high contact stress with low torque resistance. Flat-race thrust ball bearings have a pair of flat washers separated by a ball element and a shaft-piloted retainer hence has a limited load capacity.
2. One directional, grooved-race thrust bearings
As the name suggests, this type of thrust bearing contains grooves and is designed to handle a thrust load in one direction. The grooves are similar to those used in radial bearings. Their load capacity is almost twice as that of the flat-race thrust bearing and their speed limit almost three times higher. However, the thrust bearing has to have a limiting speed, which is significantly low due to the fact that balls spin at high speeds.
3. Two directional, grooved-race thrust bearing
Apart from their ability to support thrust in both directions, they have the same characteristics as those of the one directional, grooved-race thrust bearings. In order to be able to perform their task in either direction, they have two stationery races, one rotating race, and two ball complements.
Where do we use thrust ball bearings?
Thrust ball bearings are mainly used in applications that are of low speed. They work in the axial top tight are widely used in the auto industry for vehicle clutches and the automobile steering mechanism. They are also used in oil drilling machines, machine tool spindles, lathe centers, crane hooks, lead screws, kingpin supports, speed reducers, and in rubber and plastics machinery.
